Thailand has an advanced banking system and the service is generally very good. It can, however, be frustrating for foreigners as not all banks have English speaking staff.
Bangkok Bank is the largest of the Thai Banks and has over 1,000 branches through the country and also has the highest international presence. But there are many other very efficient banks in Thailand and Phuket has branches of most of them.
Other banks worthy of consideration include: Siam Commercial Bank, Krungsri, Krungthai, TMB and Kasikorn Bank.
Opening a Bank Account in Thailand
If you wish to open a bank account in Thailand because you have purchased a property it is best to ask your agent to assist with this.
Opening a bank account always depends not just on the bank, but also on the branch you choose as things can vary between branches. In our opinion, to avoid frustration, you are better off getting guidance from someone who is familiar with the ways things work in Phuket.
General Information
Opening hours: generally 8.30am and 3.30pm (Monday to Friday) except public and bank holidays.
ATM Machines: Most major banks have ATM machines which accept major cards
Currency Exchange: Operate from most banks. Also mobile currency exchange centres operate in the evening in major resorts like Patong and Karon from 7.00am to 9.00pm, 7 days a week including holidays.
Credit Cards: Visa/Mastercard accepted by all banks and local stores. AMEX is not acceptable in many places including banks.
Hotels: Most major hotels will exchange money but at a less favourable rate than the banks. It is always best to find a bank to exchange money, although the occasional exchange booth may also offer satisfactory rates.
