About the Royal Thai Police

The Royal Thai Police is the main police force in Thailand, consisting of over 200,000 individuals and making up nearly 20% of all civil servants in The Kingdom. The force also includes immigration and traffic police, as well the incorporating the Tourist Police in areas where there are many foreigners or high tourists numbers.

Interestingly, the Thai Police is also recognized in Thailand as the fourth armed services, with most officers graduating from the Armed Forces Academy before entering the Police Force.

The Phuket Tourist Police

Phuket also has a Tourist Police. This branch of Thailand’s police force traces its route back to 1976 and these days is comprised of many foreign nationals speaking a broad range of languages.

As tourism keeps expanding in Thailand, the tourist police are proving to be invaluable, assisting tourists with all manner of services and helping them with the difficulties they may face as a tourist in Thailand.

Like the regular police force, the tourist police force also wear uniforms, so for newcomers to Thailand, don’t be surprised to see a white face wearing a police uniform. It is estimated that there are now over 1,500 enlisted Thais and foreigners in the tourist police force throughout Thailand.
